PODCASTS…
Loss and Found Productions, The UnRecovering: Historical, heartfelt, tragic, beautiful storytelling, driven by character actors, music and sound design
This first example is an epic podcast called, “The UnRecovering” and the first episode is, “Recovering Julio”. I performed the sound design, wrote and performed the music and mixed the episode. Best enjoyed with headphones.
More about the episodes can be found at lossandfoundproductions.com.
What happens when you piece together a story about a life that ended suddenly? A visit to the scene of the loss leads the narrator to uncover a story about her grandfather, a Polish Jew wanted by Hitler, trailed by J. Edgar Hoover, and whose life intersected with FDR. Misfiled archives, previously unknown research, and other finds help her assemble the puzzle pieces of secrets in this third-generation suicide investigation told against the backdrop of World War II.
Episode 2 of “The Un/Recovering” is now available. This is the story of Camilla Metal Brinkman’s father, Ned. It’s a fascinating continuation of the story that is endearing and powerful. I hope you enjoy episode 2. More about the episode can be found at lossandfoundproductions.com.
FILM SCORING…
MUSIC…
Below are a number of music examples. All were produced, engineered and mixed by me and I was also a co-writer on a number of them. “Smart Kids” is a duo-band I’m in with the extraordinarily talented Jeff Knowlton. “The Wild Sea” (formerly “Amusia”) is a band I played in for many years that was led by my genius brother Todd and the exceptionally great singer, Ruth Anzalone. They were the songwriters and for art pop, it’s about as good as it gets.
VIDEOS…
Lego Brands: Rebrickulous: Youthful, fun, energetic and sometimes chaotic!
From January of 2018 through March of 2020, I worked on the extremely popular and hilarious Lego Brands, YouTube show, “Rebrickulous” for IndieWhip. I mixed 89 of the 137 episodes. For most part, it was one per week, non-stop for two years. While the channel shows just over a million views, some of the episodes have been watched more than 3 million times, putting the total number of views above 100 million views for the series.
The biggest challenges were always the environments, as the hosts and guests wore wireless lav mics while doing pranks and builds, all while finding themselves in the craziest of situations. This included Lego building challenges while in stunt airplanes, on zip-lines, in dune buggies, in helicopters, in water, on boats - you name it. I had live production dialog to sort and make intelligible while keeping the energy high and the music loud. Add piles of sound FX tracks to the chaos and I had my work cut out for me each week.
On top of all of that, there were also some extremely tight deadlines and varying workflows, which made this some of the most challenging work of my career, but it was also some of the most rewarding. Below are a few examples of that show and you can find the rest of them by clicking here. These are certainly worth a watch, just for the comedy alone.
The Markley Group: One Summer Street, Cool corporate, loud music, upbeat, somewhat technical
This next one is a far more straightforward, “cool corporate” video that I mixed the audio for BC Media Productions and their client, The Markley Group. From loud offices to server rooms, there were many challenging environments to contend with. Add to that the challenge of keeping the energy up by mixing the music a little louder than I normally would, along with somewhat technical language, it was a bit unusual, but also fun to work on. As always, this turned into another excellent piece by Ben Consoli and BC Media Productions, one of my longest running clients.
Bose, BOSEbuild Speaker Cube: Fun, light, driven by sound design and music
In this next video, I was hired to sound design, perform Foley, add sound effects and mix this piece for IndieWhip and their client, Bose. It seems simple the first time you watch it, but everything you hear are sound effects I recorded and Foley that I performed - the birds, footsteps, the coffee maker (where would I ever find that sound?), the cabinet door, the speaker assembly sounds, the test sounds as well the final “audio test” sound. Nothing was recorded on set, except the ending conversation, which was captured with an on-camera mic due to an audio recording failure. Without the possibility of an ADR session, I had to make it at least intelligible and hopefully, seamless and convincing.
WPI: “Innovate Everything” Admissions Video: Fun, energetic, motivational, interesting
In this video, I added natural sound, effects and mixed the audio for BC Media Productions and their client, WPI. This 12 minute video was shot around the globe in a huge variety of indoor and outdoor locations and each presented challenges. I added Foley and backgrounds throughout the piece to connect the viewers to the locations, while minimizing distractions. Because it was shot in many locations, another challenge was getting a consistent and cohesive sound for the whole piece, so that it felt comforting. The goal was to never let the sound “take you out” of the moment. This was a huge undertaking and I’m really proud of the results.
UKG, Future of Work: Light, inspiring, workplace comfort, driven by sound design
On this next one, I worked as the sound supervisor, foley artist, sound designer and re-recording mixer. There are literally hundreds of tracks in this excellent video for BC Media Productions and their client, UKG (United Kronos Group).
Amazon, AR View: High energy, inspirational, driven by music
For this video, I was hired as the Music Supervisor and mix engineer. I added some additional music elements to the track as well as a few sound FX for BC Media Productions and their client, Amazon.
Bose, From A Wave and Secret Sauce: Educational, fun, scientific, driven by sound effects and music
There are two videos below that I worked on for IndieWhip and their client, Bose. I was hired to produce, engineer and mix the song, "Sound of Your Heart”, perform the sound design and final mixes on the pieces as well as serve as a technical consultant on-set and throughout the post process. The results were driven by a truly collaborative effort between the client, producers and post team. I worked closely with everyone, especially in the post process to really nail how the sounds and graphics had to function as one. I sometimes felt like this was the perfect project for me to work on as it brought together my background in music, sound, music composition, producing, engineering and mixing music in recording studios (and at this very studio, Q Division, in Somerville, MA) as well as my audio for picture experience. This was one of the toughest, yet most enjoyable projects I’ve worked on to date.
